Avocado toast is one of the most versatile meals to make, and it’s an easy way to impress friends, family or your S.O. since it’s just about as trendy as the unicorn latte (…and also tastes much better).

Here’s the key to getting it right:

STEP #1: START WITH GOOD BREAD

There’s a time and a place for classic wonder bread, but this isn’t it. Go for heartier, thick breads that can stand up to lots of toppings and have a strong flavor profile, like rye or pumpernickel.

STEP #2: USE A PERFECTLY RIPE AVOCADO

Perfectly ripe is the key here. Use an avocado that’s soft, but still has some firmness to it. Avoid ones that are hard or so soft that the fruit inside has pulled away from the skin–You either won’t be able to mash it or it will be brown. Lightly mash the avocado into a chunky texture or just slice it. You can mix in salt and pepper during this step, as well.

STEP #3: ADD ONE OR MORE TOPPINGS

Here’s where you can get really creative, using a variety of toppings that add flavor and texture. Here are some great options:

  • Pepper flakes
  • Red Onion
  • Tomatoes
  • Asparagus
  • Pomegranate Seeds
  • Poached or Fried Egg
  • Pepitas
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Fresh Herbs
  • Bacon
